This makes no sense as a poll, do the muffler delete now, if it annoys you buy the roush? Might aswell try the cheap way

Stock annoys me. :p

I fully intend to try muffler delete first. I was merely curious to see what Oppo would say.

muffler delete. much cheaper and sounds much better. Delete cats as well because Michigan :)

Nah, gotta have some kind of mufflers on it. It might sound cool at first, but it gets old real quick. I’d go for Borla or Roush. And keep the cats, too.

I can’t say I prefer either over the stock sound.

Muffler delete sounds good at low rpm, but starts to sound shitty to me at WOT. Go roush

not really. I DD my truck with just a 4in straigh pipe out the side. sounds amazing.

Muffler deletes on a turbo car aren’t that bad; the (Neon) SRT-4 came from the factory with no muffler(s.) just a resonator to quell drone.

Muffler deletes on a GT are obnoxious.

Interesting. I hadn’t thought about that. The only muffler-less ones I’ve driven were NA setups, and they were maddeningly awful (for daily driving, anyway).

well, some of them (and I wince at the guys on Mustang Forums who do this) go full hog with catless “off-road” X pipe and muffler/resonator deletes.

that’s just nasty. to me those guys are like coal-rollers; “I’m a wanna-be Alpha Male, but I can’t legally piss on you to assert my dominance so I’m going to do this instead.”

Wow! There’s no way I could justify 4in exhaust on mine, not without some serious upgrades, that is. Back-pressure’s more important to me than sound.

Haha, yeah I see that a lot too. It keeps getting perpetuated as a good idea, too.

The thing about off-road pipes and the removal of catalytic converters is that it’s illegal for a car driven on public roads. That alone should keep it from being the first go-to suggestion to young buyers. The legal options should be presented first, before winking and nudging and hinting at what someone may or may not be able to get away with.

Even though Michigan doesn’t require regular inspections for passenger cars, tampering with the emissions stuff is a federal offense. Valid suggestions should be brought up first before considering shady alternatives.

Plus, cats have a bad reputation. High-flow units have come a long way in the past few decades, and are no longer the awfully restrictive devices that they used to be. Removing them just doesn’t offer the same power benefits that it used to.

It’s also worth mentioning that many of these methods come from off-road racing backgrounds. Not only does that throw street driveability requirements out the window, but it’s less practical and more focused on squeezing out every last bit of power, as well as shedding every last unnecessary ounce. Such compromises can hurt the enjoyability of a car, unless you’re submitting yourself to a placebo effect.

Is the sound worth it? Everyone has to make that decision for themselves.

I actually think the muffler delete sounds better. Which is surprising because I usually don’t like deletes. I love hearing the turbo.

Just a warning though, I would not pull out that resonator. My Dad’s ‘15 went from very loud with just the Roush axlebacks to obnoxiously loud with the Ford Racing X pipe. Granted, it has the side exhaust so it probably exaggerates it a little. He actually ended up putting restrictors in the side pipes.

Not with a turbo. and backpressure is a myth from internet forums

Hmm. FWIW, Oppo is part of the internet too. I’m afraid I’m not qualified to prove or disprove the theory.

If you’re interested in tearing the myth apart, this is the document that I’ve been referring to sometimes when the topic comes up.

eh reading isnt my thing. I just know from experience from working at a performance shop with a dyno and tuning on similar cars with different set ups. As long as your not putting a huge exhaust (5in) on a little 4 banger your good. My truck is 4in straight pipe because the factory size is 4in and the exhaust rusted off so i made it sound better :) you need to match the size of the exhaust with the engine and power output.

Kinja'd!!! jimz > TheD0k_2many toys 2little time
07/23/2016 at 16:23

Kinja'd!!!0

backpressure is not a myth; your engine needs some in order to prevent burned exhaust valves. if it didn’t affect engine operation, why do carbureted motorcycles need re-jetting if you put on a less restrictive exhaust?

but it’s usually not relevant since the headers alone usually provide enough to prevent that.

the problem is with parts dealers and manufacturers who practically say “off-road” with a wink and an elbow nudge.

My truck’s 2.5" (maybe 2.75", not sure), single pipe. But that’s stock, and it probably won’t see a dyno for a long time (if ever). It’s just a work truck, and if it ever does get any power upgrades, it’ll probably just be mild top-end stuff.

That’s because of the synthetic noise...We both know this. It’s not real. It’s like BMW. But it does sound good inside.
